Red Rover...are you dead or alive?

Those of you on Facebook already know about the mis-hap with Superman and Taylor and the red truck on an icy road.

So here is where the story picks up....called the insurance company (thank goodness for full coverage) and they came and got the truck, took it to south Kansas City (thanks a whole bunch) and declared it a total loss. We kinda disagreed because it appeared to be cosmetic damage only. The doors would still shut, no glass was broken, one tail light was cracked but not broken. It had been a very slow crash and roll, so the only thing we thought needed immediate attention was the mirror (missing) and the front tire (tire came off).  Yes, the truck is 11 yrs old, but we pretty much just use it at the farm anyway. It doesn't need to be pretty for that.

So we decided to buy the truck back from the salvage yard. We will still get to keep the bulk of the settlement money, and we would just fix the mirror and tire, and all would be well. The insurance company would not pay to bring the truck back, though. So Ryan and Casey and I went down to the salvage yard, changed the tire (put on the spare) and drove it 100 miles home safely.

But then, the fun began....took the tire into the repair place to see about putting it back on the rim. Rim is damaged. Can't put the tire back on. Needs new rim. Okay, that's do-able. Body shop man says he will look at it and give us an estimate to make it pass the safety inspection. BUT then we discovered that the 4 wheel drive doesn't work correctly...can shift into it, but it won't shift out. Hmmmmm....

So, I called the insurance company back. Since we haven't finalized the deal, we might end up giving Red Rover back to the salvage yard. I will miss him if he is really dead. Lots of fun times associated with that little truck. There was one time i dropped the only key to it into the lake. That wasn't so fun. :)

But mostly, i have come to realize what a great blessing was ours when Scott and Taylor crashed. One totalled truck....but not a scratch, bruise, or dent anywhere on either of them. They could have been hurt badly or killed. When it first happened we didn't really think that much about it, but i have come to realize that we were blessed. No question about it.

It is time to give that little red truck a good-bye kiss and let it go. I remember how hard it was to let my grey Vega go. Brody said 'arent you going to kiss it good bye" as your dad left to trade it in. I think I cried all day. It was the only vehicle I picked out and did the paper work all by my self. Pick out another red truck and be safe! Love, mom
